Objective: To think critically while drawing in a group.
Props: Flipchart Papers depends on how many groups are,
Colored pencils for everyone,
Colored candies for everyone (optional)
Prepare stations for each small group before activity starts. Put flipchart papers and colored pencils in each station.
Step by step instructions
- In the big circle, divide them into small groups (4-6 is ideal).
Note: if you have colored candies, use them to divide participants into small groups.
- Ask participants to draw an island that has everything they enjoy and wish for on it (they have to take things with them in the island, whatever they want so they will have better conditions while staying in the island, no limitations exist but must be appropriate). It is the best of all possible worlds.
- They will have 1 minute in 1 rotation.
- After 1 minute, ask the participants to pass their drawing to the person on their left. This person will continue the drawing.
- Then pass on every 1 minute. At the end they will be able to add final touches.
- The full rotation will end after the drawing is back to the person who started it.
- Once the students have their own islands back (after a full rotation), they can stand up group by group and present their island in front of their friends.
Note: it is better to have different colored pencils in each group, so their Island can be colorful.
Debrief
Gather the students in a group and ask some of the following:
- How did you feel when another person added to your drawing?
- What did you think of the end result?
- What does this tell us about teamwork and community?
- Would it be easier to do it by yourself?
- How can you apply this to real life?
Educator's note: This activity tells us that people live better in a community than alone. With cooperation we managed to take a lot of things in the island, something one of us forgot to take, somebody else took it. The perspective tells us that everyone of the participants imagined the circumstances in their own way.
